Centers for Disease Control

Client Need:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) required help in its mission to provide research, information, education and training. Following September 11th, CDC/NIOSH commissioned a centralized experts’ database of chemical agents that might be used in future terrorist events.

CSS' Response:

CSS’ Information Support Group developed the Emergency Response Safety and Health Database (ERSH-DB). The secure, Web-enabled SQL database improved the quality of information and the ease and speed of searches to address the issues of urgency should a crisis require use of the database.

CSS contacted and interviewed emergency responders across the U.S., and assessed their information needs and search preferences. CSS then developed an Emergency Response Card (ERC) that satisfied stakeholders’ needs while aggregating previously dispersed information in a single, easily readable and usable tool. CSS then developed an innovative Web-based front-end to enable peer reviewers to login securely and review and comment upon ERCs.
