NCBI

Client Need:

The National Center for Biotechnology Information’s (NCBI) goal is to advance medical informatics and understanding of the molecular basis of health and disease. NCBI wanted to create a science ‘primer’ for a broad range of topics in bioinformatics, genetics and genomics. NCBI also required technical support for research in text mining and for outreach and user support.

CSS' Response:

CSS designed the About NCBI home page and developed all content for "A Science Primer", including compliance with federally-mandated Section 508 standards. The design included an easy-to-use navigation structure that provides flawless cross-referencing and linking of files.

For the NCBI Advanced Workshop for Bioinformatics Information Specialists (NAWBIS), CSS created Web-based/live-link training course materials and a database to capture, categorize, and convert document content into HTML format.

CSS also helped with text-processing research to tag gene and molecular terms in scientific articles. This research was applied to NCBI’s Books resource, an on-line library of biomedical textbooks.

For NCBI's outreach efforts, CSS provided course development, teaching and Flash-based tutorials on NCBI's databases and tools. On-going outreach includes extensive email help desk support for BLAST and all other NCBI resources.
